The profession of project management is evolving. Artificial Intelligence is becoming integrated into how we manage and execute projects. I've seen how project managers have had to relearn their jobs, and this is why the PMI CPMAI is so important right now.

Section 01

PMI Certified Professional in Managing Artificial Intelligence (CPMAI) Certification: The Definitive Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence in Project Management

If you're managing AI projects or planning to step into this space, you need more than general PM skills. You need a structured approach that blends PMP certification training with AI techniques. The PMI CPMAI fills this gap.

Section 02

Certification

Currently, PMI CPMAI (formerly Cognitive Project Management in AI) certifies candidates to help fill the demand for Artificial Intelligence project managers. This is not just another certification; it includes a framework for managing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) initiatives from the planning stage through to execution.

PMI CPMAI certifications differ from the rest PMP certifications and the traditional PMP certification in that the PMI CPMAI have a focus on the challenges that come with AI projects, whereas the PMPs have a more general project management focus. These challenges include, but are not limited to, considerations around data governance, model evaluation, operational AI, and ethics of AI. The credential demonstrates your capability in executing the six-phase CPMAI framework. This framework prioritizes the successful completion of AI projects that yield measurable business benefits, while also ensuring adherence to ethical considerations.

Section 03

What Makes CPMAI Certification Important?

To put it bluntly, there is a rapidly growing demand for professionals in the ai project manager domainreflecting many of the benefits of PMP certification seen in technology-driven roles. In the next 10 years, it is forecasted that there will be over 19 million jobs related to AI (World Economic Forum). In addition to this, global investments in AI will range around $632b by 2028 (IDC Research). Also, 86% of organizations consider AI and big data as critical skills (Dremio).

These numbers are impressive, but I have seen firsthand the impact this credential has on people's careers.

Career differentiation: You are not just an ordinary PM; you are someone who has the ability to connect the business and user side with the technical side of the AI teams.

Applied knowledge: the framework and approach teach you to govern and oversee data preparation, model development, and the ethical implementation of AI.

Value across all verticals: AI project management is critical in all sectors and industries, be it healthcare, finance, retail, or manufacturing.

In addition to this, someone who is a project manager in AI will earn higher compensation than a project manager in any other discipline.

The benefits that come with PMP certification will also apply in this domain, but what makes you unique is that specialized layer of AI you gain with CPMAI.

Section 04

Who Should Pursue This Certification?

The CPMAI is an inclusive credential. The following professionals benefit from the CPMAI the most:

  • Project Managers spearheading AI and machine learning projects.
  • Data Scientists seeking more structured project methodologies.
  • Technology Leaders implementing AI projects in support of business objectives.
  • Business Analysts utilizing AI solutions.
  • Program Managers managing digital transformation initiatives.
  • IT Managers implementing AI infrastructure.

The most attractive thing about the CPMAI is that you do not need to have an extensive background in AI. While the PMP certification has more restrictive PMP certification requirements, CPMAI is more accommodating to professionals who are eager to learn.

Section 05

CPMAI Certification Prerequisites

The good news is that the CPMAI has minimal barriers to entry. To enrol in the CPMAI, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Complete the PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course (30-hour mandatory training).
  • You must show understanding of the CPMAI methodology.

Nothing else. You do not have to possess any previous experience in project management, although a background in project management, data science, IT, or business analysis can be an advantage. The PMP certification requires a minimum of 35 hours of education and experience, which makes the CPMAI a more attractive option for newcomers.

Section 06

The CPMAI Exam Format Breakdown

The following represents the exam structure:

Exam ComponentsDetails
Exam Title:PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI (PMI-CPMAI)™
Total Questions:120 multiple-choice
Exam Length:160 minutes (2 hours 40 minutes)
Mode of Exam:Online-proctored
Exam Language:English
Exam Type:Scenario-based questions

You're being tested on the application of the CPMAI methodology spanning all 6 phases: data governance, model evaluation, ethics, and problem-solving.

Section 07

CPMAI Certification Costs

Let's break down the investment:

  • PMI Member: 699 USD
  • Non-Member: 899 USD

Training costs may vary and run in the range of $500-$1,500 to complete the 30-hour prep course. CPMAI and PMP certifications are similarly priced when compared to the PMP certification cost, focusing on high-growth specialities.

AI project managers typically earn higher salaries, covering the cost of this investment in their first year post certification.

Section 08

The Six-Phase CPMAI Methodology

The CPMAI framework forms the basis of the entire certification and focuses on the delivery of AI projects across 6 distinct phases.

Phase I: Business Understanding

Learn to align AI solutions with real business needs. Assessing feasibility, defining ROI, and determining success criteria are all vital. Many AI projects fail because they address the wrong problem.

Phase II: Data Understanding

Establish and assess data sources for quality and regulatory compliance. You will develop the building blocks for actionable AI data management across the lifecycle of the project. Appreciating the different types of project risks will assist you tremendously.

Phase III: Data Preparation

Refine and transform the untamed data into AI-compliant actionable inputs through implementing quality checks, augmentation, and compliance controls. This phase tends to take 60-80% of the project timeline, and CPMAI prepares you to handle it effectively.

Phase IV: Model Development

Utilize iterative development cycles to construct and synthesize your AI models. You will be taught from the spectrum of supervised learning to generative AI, and you will need to modify your project management plan to adapt to the evolving models.

Phase V: Model Evaluation

Evaluate and assess models to check for drift, bias, and reliability and explainability. Ensure your AI systems sustain the business and ethics objectives prior to deployment.

Phase VI: Operationalization

Deploy AI in an ethical manner supported by inclusive governance frameworks, plans for continuous improvement, and monitoring of production. This is where technical and business excellence converge.

Section 09

CPMAI vs Other Certifications

How is CPMAI compared to Others?

CertificationsSpecializationRequirementsMost Applicable To
PMI-CPMAIAI project management30 hours of prepAI/ML project managers
PMPProject management35 hours + some experienceconventional PMs
PMI-ACPAgile methodologies21 hours + some experienceAgile PMs

The debate also lies in the PMP certification vs. masters in project management. CPMAI provides specialized, immediately applicable capabilities that are often lacking in master's programs.

Section 10

How to Prepare for CPMAI Certification

Step 1: Select your Training Provider. PMI-Approved Training Partners have to be authorized by PMI. Choose one that meets the 30-hour requirement, incorporates real-world case studies, and has study aids that cover the complete exam, similar to the structure followed in PMP online learning programs.

Step 2: Understand the Methodology. Don't just memorize, make sure to understand and be able to apply the six steps. Engage with scenario-based activities and instances that you have seen or worked on.

Step 3: More Practice. Take all practice tests. A PMI practice test consists of 100 questions to be answered in 120 minutes. Use this test to help focus on areas that are less clear to you.

Step 4: Schedule Your Exam. Prepare your exam date, check that your computer passes the online proctoring requirements. You'll be ready to take the 120 questions with test-taking confidence.

Similar to the PMP exam, your exam time is your primary constraint. Use your prep to answer questions and come back to ones you are unsure about.

Section 11

How to Maintain Your CPMAI Credential

Certification is for a 3-year period, and within that time, you need to acquire 30 PDUs (Professional Development Units), which can be credited to you in the following ways:

  • Participating in learning activities (courses, webinars)
  • Teaching Others
  • Conference Presentations
  • Publication Reading
  • Volunteer Work

Each PDU is worth one hour of professional development activities, and the renewal process for the PMP certification renewal is the same, which means that if you have both of these, you'll be able to apply for both of them with the same activities.

Section 12

Career Prospects Upon Achieving CPMAI

Industry positions that you can occupy with CPMAI certification include, but are not limited to:

  • AI Project Manager
  • Machine Learning Program Lead
  • Data Science Strategist
  • Digital Transformation Director
  • AI Product Owner
  • Technology Project Leader

Key industries currently actively recruiting include technology, healthcare, financial services, retail, manufacturing, and consulting. AI Project Managers can expect to be compensated $20,000 – $40,000 more than other Project Managers, reflecting the higher project manager salary associated with AI-focused roles.

Section 13

Real Success Stories

"CPMAI has provided me with a view of how to adapt PMP knowledge for AI and advanced data projects, with specific detail around DataOps and a foundation of AI and ML knowledge. It gives Project Managers more strategic value as organizations add AI to their portfolios."

— Krystene "KJ" Jennings, PMP, CPMAI, ASQ CSS-GB Manager, IT Service Centre

Certification increases overall confidence in leading AI projects, as well as communication with more technical teams and position promotion.

Section 14

Is CPMAI Worth It?

Yes, if you want to stand out in the field of AI project management, it is worth it. The skills, investment and differentiating potential you will gain from it will allow you to manage AI projects successfully.

However, you should create a career plan. For traditional project management roles, start with PMP, but for the future roles focusing on AI and ML, CPMAI is the ideal pathway. It is common for professionals to pursue both, as they can use them as complementary qualifications.
