Your PMP certification doesn’t last forever. I realised this when I got a renewal reminder while I had only eight months remaining in my cycle. It was sheer panic.
Keeping PDUs for PMP certification is not as hard as getting certified. They just require a smart strategic mix that aligns with your schedule and budget.
I will tell you how to keep your PMP credential without losing your money or your weekends.
PDUs or professional development units are an industry standard that measures your professional growth as a project manager. They are evidence that you are on top of the methodologies in the tools of project management. The industry is constantly evolving with new digital tools, shifts in leadership approaches and development in Agile frameworks.
The certification cycle starts on the award date. Not keeping up with the requirement results in a suspension that incurs reinstatement fees or complete retaking of the exam, which does not seem pleasing, considering the 300 + hours you had to invest in the certification and understanding PMP certification renewal requirements is critical to maintaining your credential.
You need 60 PDUs within three years, with a specific breakdown:
If, for example, you have 40 PDUs from attending webinars and online courses, you have to get 20 from volunteering (Giving Back) or other webinars (Education). This flexibility enables you to customized your Earning PDUs to your preference and availability.
Bonus: Practising project managers who have worked for more than 6 months a year for 3 years will receive 8 PDUs.
In this stage, you cover any activity where you are consuming project management knowledge. You, the learner and the participant. Most people earn the majority of their PDUs here because the options are plentiful and easy to access.
Educational activities include, but are not limited to, online courses, webinars, podcasts, reading books and articles related to project management, attending conferences, and viewing educational videos. Attendees or students of a program need not be capped; you may earn all 60 PDUs, but having a variety will give you a more quality professional development.
This type of activity is aimed at rewarding you for returning to the PM community. You can be the teacher, the creator, or the contributor. These activities often provide deeper learning because teaching involves the complete command of the material, demonstrating strong project leadership skills.
Giving Back involves volunteering at the PMI chapters, authoring PM articles or books, developing instructional materials, delivering training or presentations, mentoring fellow project managers, and conference speaking. 45 PDUs maximum from this type.

1. Take Up Online Courses on Project Management
The convenience of online courses for PDUs is unmatched. Sites like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy have hundreds of PDU-eligible courses. 1 PDU per contact hour is available with no maximum cap.
Look for courses with the “PDU-eligible” or “PMI-approved” badges; these ladder PMI completion reporting, relieving you from manual completion reporting. Many professionals also use a comprehensive PMP course to refresh their knowledge while earning PDUs simultaneously.
2. Take Part in Project Management Webinars
Webinars can be described as the low-hanging fruit in terms of PDU earning. PMI chapters offer free webinars on a weekly basis, and ProjectManagement.com has dozens that they offer monthly. Join from your desk, spend 1 hour, and earn 1 PDU. Make sure to collect the certificates for your attendance as proof.
Setting aside 1 hour a week from your lunch for webinars can easily total 50+ PDUs a year, which is more than enough to fulfil your renewal needs and help you stay informed on the latest trends.
3. Listen to Project Management Podcasts
You might want to consider listening to Project Management Podcasts to earn PDUs while travelling. The PDU Podcast, The Project Management Podcast, and PM Point of View describe things which you can learn in the time it takes to go for a walk or drive. You can earn up to 30 PDUs by listening to a Podcast for one hour, which translates to 1 PDU.
PMI audits claims, so gather notes on the application of knowledge gained to support your defence. Be brief, and document the day, lesson or subject, summary of the lesson, and how it will be used.
4. Read Project Management Books
Updating your version of the PMBOK Guide and reading other methodology books in the Project Management Library, or authors in Project Management, earns you up to 30 PDUs. You receive 1 PDU, which can go up to a maximum of 30 PDUs, for every hour spent reading. 15-20 PDUs might be earned by reading 30 minutes every day for a year. In case of audits, the time spent reading and the main points should be documented.
5. Volunteer with PMI or Your Local Chapter
On top of everything, the total of PDUs earned while volunteering creates a larger network. The PDU earned can go up to a maximum of 45 for every hour spent volunteering. Assuming, on a monthly basis, you spend 3 hours volunteering for the committee of a local chapter, 36 PDUs can be earned for every cycle completed.
6. Compose Articles or Books Concerning Project Management
Contribute to Project Management Institute libraries or magazines, other blogs, and LinkedIn. Claim 1 PDU per hour of writing (45 PDU Max) and, if you write 3 articles, claim 20 PDU, each over 20 hours, while earning 20 PDUs and validating your status as a thought leader. Articles must be on the topics of project, program, or portfolio management.
7. Practice Quizzes Certified by PMI
After purchasing a quiz and passing with a score of 80% or higher, the quiz offers 10 PDUs while posing as a $10-50 dollar quiz. These quizzes are better suited for those who are near their renewal deadlines and need a quick boost for PDUs.
8. Educational Videos and Movies About Project Management
Educational movies such as 'Applying the Fundamentals of Project Management' are sold by PMI and are equivalent to 23 PDUs each. Each method is capped at a maximum of 23 PDUs, so it cannot be the main strategy. However, it is beneficial if you need quick credits and prefer passive learning.
9. Conferences and Symposia About Project Management
A conference is the most time-efficient way to gain PDUs. Over 2 to 3 days, PMI's global conference offers 15 to 25 PDUs. Regional symposiums are the same. By virtue of networking and learning new tools, attending 1 major conference a year gives you 20 PDUS. It is suggested to budget $500-2000 so you can cover travel and accommodation comfortably while also registering for the event, and understanding the PMP certification cost helps in planning these investments.
10. Teach or Present on Project Management Topics
This applies to speaking at conferences, conducting internal training, university teaching, or even hosting webinars. It's 1 PDU for each hour spent on presentations. A 90-minute webinar earns you 1.5 PDUs and strengthens your position as an industry expert. Note that Prep time does not count; only the time spent on the actual presentation does.
11. Prepare PM Course Content or Supporting Instructional Materials
Creating training content for other project managers falls under the category “Giving Back”. You earn 1 PDU for each hour of work (Max 45 PDU). While this is very time-consuming, the result is rewarding as content creation ensures that the individual has attained mastery of the subject. If you develop an internal training module, you can earn 30+ PDUs.
12. Participate in PMI Study Groups or Forums of Discussion
Discussions of Project Management that are organised and targeted toward defined learning outcomes can be claimed as PDUs. These are formalised groups with evidence of engagement, not casual project exchanges. Monthly 90-minute study group meetings earn 1.5 PDUs per session, for 18 PDUs annually.
13. Participate in Completion of Documented Training Programs
Formal training in university certificate programs and other approved training vendor courses offers targeted PDUs. You may earn up to 15 PDUs per semester in academic programs. Keep the transcripts as evidence.
The cost for these programs is higher ($200-$3,000), but they offer detailed training, and in addition, often provide career support and networking opportunities, which is beyond the PDU value, and considering the benefits of PMP certification makes this investment worthwhile.
14. Continuously Function as a Practising Project Manager
Automatic PDU credits become available if you ‘Claim’ a job role with PMI profile employment history as a Project Manager (with at least six months per connected role per year). That is 24 PDUs earned for claiming those roles as ‘active’ for three-year cycles, and PDUs earned from employment. These sources are the easiest available.
15. Sign up for PDU Email Briefs
Signing up for briefs is another activity that, PDUs-wise, is for no domestic gain at all. PMI members and training sponsors send briefs on free opportunities available. The gain from subscribing to five PMs is 2, net 10-15 free PDUs from webinars every month, guaranteed. Have no fear of lacking PDUs.
The main false assumption about these credits is that they can be freely earned, randomly earned. Use these strategies to maximise their earning potential for these credits.
In this case, the loss can result from the following seven blatant omissions:
In this case, log in to PMI.org, up to the point of Certifications, click Report PDUs and fill in your activities: what do I claimed, what I did, and imagine the logos of the blocks I placed, and exact dates (as in what is my day to day I do calendar). Also, upload the documents to this and certificates of completed documents, confirmation of completion. PMI does random audits on draws. Put documents in folders kept in order for three years.
You are to be aware of the report on the PMI official mobile app, as it allows you to track the completion of other activities and report said PDUs.
PDUs that are most often required do not need to undergo a costly extenuating process. There are 15 different available solutions available which will help you earn 60 PDUs, as well as develop a better sense for the Project Management domains, and programs like Techademy’s PMP course online offer structured PDU-earning opportunities alongside comprehensive training.
Instead of procrastinating until the renewal panic sets in, you can start improving your skills and earning PDUs as soon as today. Earning free PDUs is as simple as obtaining free webinars, podcasts, or volunteering. And remember, your PMP certification is an important part of your personal professional portfolio, so take good care of it.
