I have been a certified SAFe professional for more than seven years now. With all that experience, I have gone through several certification renewal cycles, so if you're looking for tips on what the SAFe certification renewal process under 2025 regulations entails, you are in luck because I have tips to make the process easier for you.
This year, the certification renewal process has changed significantly. To renew your SAFe certification in 2025, you’ll need to log into the SAFe Community Platform, complete the required Professional Development Units (PDUs) or Scrum Education Units (SEUs), pay the renewal fee, and then download your updated digital credential. I’m here to guide you through these steps and share personal tips to ensure you don’t get stuck halfway through the process.
Whether you are an Agilist, Program Consultant, or Master Scrum, earning any of the certifications is already a task, but implementing tangible changes to make sure the certifications add value becomes the center of attention. In this guide, I will provide details on these steps along with my personal tips for SAFe certification renewal in 2025 to guarantee that you do not get stuck halfway through the process.
Let's first focus on building a framework that we can use with the 2025 details later. Unlike your first certification, renewal changes focus from training and testing to continuous learning and professional development. This is where the difference lies, and you need to pay close attention to these principles.
The fundamental reasoning behind Scaled Agile's renewal requirements is that practitioners keep up to date with the newest changes to the prescribed framework practices, including the SAFe core values—alignment, built-in quality, transparency, and program execution. Each time you renew your certification, you are reaffirming your commitment to the most recent SAFe practices, which to your employers and clients is crucial.
The renewal process also provides additional benefits of SAFe beyond those covered in the previous sections. Each renewal cycle is an opportunity to increase your knowledge, build community connections, and explore different avenues of application of SAFe that you may not have encountered previously.
The approach to renewing a SAFe certification has completely changed in 2025. Scaled Agile has made some impactful changes for all certification holders, whether you're a SAFe Scrum Master, SAFe Product Owner, or an advanced practitioner like an SAFe RTE certification holder.
Setting these changes in motion was explained by Chief Methodologist Dr. Emma Lanning during a recent SAFe community webinar. "Our goal with the 2025 renewal updates is to increase the rigor of the process while making it more relevant to how practitioners actually work with SAFe," she said.
It's important to know what the requirements are for each level of certification, including details like the SAFe Scrum Master certification cost ($195) and the SAFe Agilist salary. The following is an analysis of the renewal requirements per SAFe certification for the year 2025, covering key certifications from the SAFe certification list:
| Certification Level | PDUs/SEUs Required | Renewal Fee (2025) | Validity Period | Additional Requirements |
| SAFe Agilist (SA) | 10 | $195 | 12 Months | 1 community contribution |
| SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) | 20 | $295 | 12 months | 2 community contributions + practice assessment |
| SAFe Scrum Master (SSM) | 10 | $195 | 12 months | 1 community contribution |
| SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager | 10 | $195 | 12 months | 1 community contribution |
| SAFe DevOps Practitioner | 8 | $175 | 12 months | None additional |
| SAFe for Teams (SP) | 5 | $95 | 12 Months | None additional |
| SAFe Release Train Engineer | 15 | $250 | 12 months | Practice assessment |
| SAFe Advanced Scrum Master | 15 | $250 | 12 months | Practice assessment |
Allow me to detail the processes of renewing your SAFe certification from my most recent encounters with the system:
Access your Scaled Agile account and go to 'My Certifications.' You should be able to see all your certifications with an expiration date listed next to them. I suggest you put a reminder for 90 days before this date to facilitate the renewal process.
Extra useful tip: The system now provides automatic reminders at 90, 60, and 30 days prior to expiration, but you should not depend completely on them – email filters tend to capture them.
The entire SAFe Community Platform is designed to streamline the renewal procedure. After logging in, you have to select "Certification Management" then "Renewal Dashboard."
The new dashboard provides a comprehensive view of:
Clear-cut requirements are associated with each certification level as detailed on the table above. The system is designed to give you personalized requirements encompassing:
This is where updates for 2025 are most beneficial. There is now more ease with recording your continuing education activities:
The platform processes most submissions automatically now, using the normal approval processes; it is expected that this occurs within 24 hours. In my case, all my submissions with the exception of one odd activity that was manually reviewed, were approved within a matter of hours.
Payment will be required after you have completed all the necessary continuing education requirements. As outlined in the table above, the 2025 SAFe certification renewal costs differ with each level of certification.
New payment methods now include:
Payment will be processed automatically once completed, and you will receive:
In less than 48 hours, I was able to, with the new system, document all necessary activities and receive updated credentials. That is a remarkable difference compared to previous years.
Accruing the requisite PDUs or SEUs remains the most challenging and time-consuming matter. Below follows the comprehensive list of qualifying activities for the year 2025:
Renewal in the SAFe community platform requires knowing how to operate it. The 2025 update does an overhaul of the user experience and here's what needs attention:
In the new interface, there is directional development:
You may now track your mobile app (IOS and Android) features as follows:
As we all know, the financial considerations of renewing SAFe certification is of great importance in planning. The cost structure of the 2025 SAFe certification renewal will consist of:
SAFe Level certifications are set at a fixed price per level.
As mentioned in the comparison table previously, the renewal fees differ with levels of certification, ranging from $95 to $295.
There are several strategies for discounts:
A lot of companies reimburse employees for the cost of renewing the SAFe certification and its recertification. However, this approach still requires a strong business case. Here is how I have approached this problem that has worked time and again:
One-page business document describing:
Make sure you submit the request at least two months before your renewal due date
Offer to facilitate an internal training session for the company as part of the expected contribution to payment renewal
This is how I got reimbursement for the last my last three renewals and even when my company was cutting budgets.
In case things don't go according to plan, missing deadlines is a common occurrence. It's important to understand the correct steps to take if things do not unfold as imagined. You'll have a 30-day grace period post-deadline set. In this period, you won't face any extra sanctions. The system will automatically flag the certificate as being in the grace period.
These restrictions boil down to how far the deadline cutoff is. For these cases, as mentioned, the system will mark your good until expiration mark as zero. While this may sound alarming, these limitations will not affect your course. The system will not impact user experience during the grace period and beyond until further notice, and for some time, the user will not face a system suspension.
You may renew within the 90-day window with a late penalty fee. These are the charges:
You have two options after your 90 days, but if you do not renew your certification, it expires.
Reinstatement: Up to 180 days after expiration
Must complete these to be eligible:
Re-Certification: Must be done after 180 days
In comparing the costs, the SAFe certification is far more economical considering the expenses tied to late fees. For example, the expense tied to renewing a SAFe Agilist certification is $195, but retaking it costs roughly $995.
With the sequence of renewals I have done, I have formulated some tactics which, if followed strategically, can increase efficiency and value:
Try to synchronize the expirations of your certifications' renewals. If you have multiple certifications, consider the following:
This strategy facilitated my managing the administrative burden of multiple renewal dates and reaping multi-certification savings.
Much of your work qualifies for DA's "On-the-Job Application" PDUs for daily work-related tasks. For this, a simple tracker is sufficient:
By documenting these activities throughout the year, I generally estimate meeting 40-50% of my PDU commitments through work activities I am already engaged in.
It has been my experience that spreading renewal activities over the year is more effective than attempting to do everything during the last few months:
This method helps to mitigate anxiety and provides for richer engagement with the material.
The latest changes to the SAFe Scrum Master certification renewal process for 2025 have made it more user-friendly and easier to engage with. Understanding the requirements and planning your continuing education smartly will help you maintain your certification through the new digital interfaces without hassle.
Keep in mind that renewal should not solely be regarded as an office chore; it is a chance to enrich one's knowledge of SAFe and engage with other professionals in the domain. Each renewal cycle has enhanced my own practice and opened me to new possibilities.
It is my recommendation that you begin the renewal process early, space out your learning activities throughout the calendar year, and make use of your daily tasks for continuing education credits. The time and resources invested in preserving your SAFe certification continue to enhance your career and significantly impact the organization.
What about you? Have you started your renewal process? What obstacles are you encountering? Let me know in the comment section as I would love to hear about your experience.
